Hosts Nepal crashed out from the group stage of AVC Asian Senior Men’s Central Zone Volleyball Championship without single win as they succumbed to straight set defeat against Maldives in their Group ‘A’ match at the Army Physical Training and Sports Centre in Lagankhel, Lalitpur, on Wednesday.
Nepal lost 25-22, 25-21, 25-14 against the South Asian rivals in the three-team group. Nepal were beaten 258-23, 25-22, 25-22 by Kyrgyzstan. The match, also virtual quarter-final, would have sent the winners into last four as both Nepal and Maldives were defeated by the table toppers Kyrgyzstan. The outcome meant Maldives made to the semi-final as group runners up.
Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan made to the semi-final from Group ‘B’ as the winners and runners up. Uzbekistan topped the group with cent percent winning record as they overcome Afghanistan in straight sets of 25-23, 29-27, 29-27. Afghanistan who finished third in the standings. Uzbekistan had registered straight sets win over all three group opponents including Turkmenistan and Bangladesh and wrapped up with nine points.
Turkmenistan inflicted four sets defeat on Bangladesh who finished the group stage without single win. Turkmenistan saw off Bangladesh 25-22, 25-16, 27-29, 25-16 to finish group stage campaign with six points. Afghanistan finished with two points and Bangladesh with one point.
The semi-finals will see Uzbekistan vie against Maldives and Turkmenistan against Kyrgyzstan. The semi-finals will be played on Thursday.
